The sleepy town of Moga bears a festive look. Posters, festoons and huge colourful hoardings all thanking Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal adorn the roads. The ocassion: Upgradation of Moga into a Municipal Council. But what goes beyond the naked eye and these illegal hoardings is that they have been put up by the Gill family. A family which counts Punjab Director General of Police Paramdeep Singh Gill among them and who has been lobbying hard for the Moga Assembly seat on a SAD (B) ticket. Having already come under the Election Commissions scanner for his activities in the area, the DGPs name doesnt find a mention but it is under the guise of the Gill family that a message has been sent to the Badals how the Gill Family is highly indebted to them for elevating the town into a municipal council. Highly placed sources close to the Gill family did confirm that these hoardings have indeed come from the DGPs family. But ask his cousin and front man Mickey Gill, and immediately he reels of the history of the Gills and says it is a thank you note from the entire community. We are a big Gill family, who hail primarily from the erstwhile Moga Mela Singh Ward. The community elders wanted to do this and we followed their orders. He is quick to add that there is nothing political about it. We had even thanked the then Congress chief minister HS Brar, who had made Moga district. But then not everybody is convinced. While the activities of DGP are common knowledge here in Moga, this is for the first time that the alignment has come out in the open, said Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain. All this time, his activities and his leanings were under wraps. While the hoarding may not carry his name, every one in the area knows as to who are the people behind this show, he said.
