‘Omar has failed Kashmir’

Dr Darakshan Andrabi, president of Socialistic Democratic Party,Jammu and Kashmir, does not mince her words when she says,“The so-called youngest Chief Minister that the Centre ensconced on us Kashmiris,Omar Abdullah, has failed. The ground reality is that in Kashmir it is not Omar but separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani who runs the state.”

She proves her point by adding: “On Eid,the valley was at peace, there was no strike,no hartal no curfew and this was not because the Government had been able to resolve the situation. This was because Geelani has not called for any hartal that day. He is the one who runs the government here.”

On the issue of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s statement on granting autonomy to Kashmir,Dr Andrabi says: “This is not what the Kashmiri on the road who pelts stones want. They do not want Pakistan and neither do they want autonomy. This is the agenda of the National Conference and not of the Kashmiris. The common man wants peace,he wants employment,he wants the draconian power given to the army to be taken back. He wants to live a normal life and I do not think that these things are too much for the Center to give.”

“The problem with the Government of India is that it is not ready to back the nationalistic Kashmiris. The advisors to PM the bureaucrats do not give the true picture. No talks on peace in Kashmir can be done without Geelani and other separatist leaders and I am sure if the Indian Government invites these people for talks they will come forward.” Adds Dr Andrabi.

When asked about her namesake Asiya Andrabi, the SDP chief who is also a well known poet says,“I was the first one to talk about the duality that Asiya was adopting. We were happy that she wanted her son to secure an Indian passport and study IT in Malaysia but this should apply for all Kashmiri youth. Asiya should ask all KAshmiris to secure an Indian passport and educate themselves. Instead she exhorts the youth to shun everything and anything that is India. So while for us the tri colour is the base for her Pakistan is her home.”

About her poetry Dr Darashan says,“My generation has grown with guns and bombs We have seen people being killed and graveyards lined up.”
