Now, audio clip of ‘Congress leaders’ surfaces

In the 3 minute, 30 second-long clip, a voice, allegedly that of Lalli Majithia, is heard telling another person, allegedly United Akali Dal leader Satnam Singh Manawa, that he is willing to send 10,000 Sikhs to the Sarbat Khalsa

TWO DAYS after the Punjab Congress came under fire for two of its leaders having attended the Sarbat Khalsa, organised by radical Sikhs, the party may face more embarrassment as an audio clip surfaced on Friday, purportedly of a conversation between the radicals and three other party leaders.

The clip, uploaded on YouTube, has the voices of three people – allegedly Congress leaders Sukhjinder Raj Singh Majithia alias Lalli Majithia, Harminder Singh Gill and Kiranjit Singh Mittha – promising to send participants to the Sarbat Khalsa. Gill and Majithia are Punjab Congress office-bearers and loyalists of party veteran Capt Amarinder Singh.

In the 3 minute, 30 second-long clip, a voice, allegedly that of Lalli Majithia, is heard telling another person, allegedly United Akali Dal leader Satnam Singh Manawa, that he is willing to send 10,000 Sikhs to the Sarbat Khalsa. The phone Majithia speaks through allegedly belongs to another Majha Congress leader Kairanjit Singh Mittha. Majithia also talks of the need for a second Gurudwara Reforms Movement.

In the second part of the clip, Harminder Singh Gill is purportedly speaking to Manawa and asks him if the resolutions have been passed. Manawa hands over the phone to another person named Sikandar and the voice, allegedly of Gill, is heard asking if Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been divested of his Fakh-e-Qaum title. The voice, being claimed to be that of Gill, is also heard asking if the jathedars have been replaced. He further speaks of the Gurdwara Reforms Movement and expresses his inability to be a part of the congregation as it may harm the organisers due to him being a Congress leader.

While Majithia was not available for comments, Gill denied that his voice was in the recording. “I always call from my phone. This is not my voice. Let them prove it is my voice,” he said, adding that the Badals were now turning the heat on the Congress as they are under fire.

Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa also said that the clip was not authentic. “The clip does not have any sanctity. Unless the government or other agencies own up and authenticate it, how could any one believe what the clip is trying to convey,” he said.

Bajwa also questioned as to who was tapping the phones of radical Sikh leaders. “Is is not illegal for any agency to tap the phones?” Bajwa asked, questioning the legality of the act.
