The hot and dry weather conditions being experienced by the city residents will continue to prevail for some time,with the Meteorological Department predicting no rain in the coming days. According to the Met Department,the sky is likely to be cloudy on June 8 and 9. But rains are not expected. The temperature is also expected to rise in the coming days.
The first week of May has been observed as the hottest week of the year with the entire region facing a heat wave.
While high temperatures prevailed at most places,Amritsar broke all records with the maximum temperature being recorded as 48 degree Celsius. Rainfall was experienced in the second week,but after May 15,a sudden rise in temperature was noted. It was 43.8 degree Celsius in the city and 44.6 degree Celsius at Chandigarh Airport on May 24.
Summers this year have been dry as compared to last year, said Rajinder Singh,Duty officer,Indian Meteorological Department. As per the report,there is not much difference in the temperatures of 2013 and 2012. Last year a total rainfall of 1.2 mm was experienced in the month of June,against the normal rainfall of 116.1mm. This year light showers were experienced due to western disturbances.
The normal date of arrival of monsoons in Chandigarh is June 29-30. Met Director Surinder Pal said that at present it is not possible to announce the date for arrival of monsoons as rains have not reached central India.
Karnataka,Tamil Nadu and parts of Bay of Bengal have been covered by monsoon. Favorable conditions for the advancement of southwest monsoons into parts of Central Arabian Sea,Goa,parts of south Konkan,Maharashtra and Telangana have been recorded. Cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan,North Rajasthan adjoining Punjab,is also observed.
