At a time when the devastating fire in the Sector-22 market should have sent the message home, chaos remained the order of the day in its parking lot. On Thursday, fire tenders had a difficult time entering the market where the fire erupted because of the haphazardly parked vehicles. Those present at the spot at the time of the fire had to literally push and lift vehicles to make way for the firemen.
Today, attendants at the parking lots remained busy distributing slips and collecting fee while no one cared to ensure if the vehicles were parked in the designated lots. The distinction between parking for two-wheelers and four wheelers is almost non-existent.
Though the Municipal Corporation has a large number of norms laid down for parking contractors,a random check of parking lots shows these are rarely followed. Attendants have been found allowing more vehicles into lots than designated.
According to the norms laid down by the MC,the vehicles should be parked as per the lots available and attendants should wear proper uniforms.
Other proposals like starting a token system at parking lots and painting them using reflective paints to make them visible at night also remain on paper.
In the numerous checks conducted by the parking committee of the MC,it has been found that the lots need to be cleared in order to ensure easy movement of fire brigades. Though challans have been issued,no concrete action has been taken.
Recently, three nominated councillors M P S Chawla,Pallav Mukherjee and Arshad Khan conducted checks and submitted a report on the violations. The report stated that action should also be initiated against the concerned officials responsible to keep a check on the contractors.
Chawla, who was authorised last year to conduct checks in the parking lots, said: We had conducted numerous checks last year. Not much change is,however, visible. There is a need to take strict action against the defaulters.
