No breather for auto operators

The committee formed for resolving the deadlock between autorickshaw operators and the Administration over phasing out autos running on petrol and diesel has come up with a report which will soon be submitted to H S Doon,SP (Traffic).

The committee formed for resolving the deadlock between autorickshaw operators and the Administration over phasing out autos running on petrol and diesel has come up with a report which will soon be submitted to H S Doon,SP (Traffic). The report,according to the committee members,has recommended phasing out all the non-CNG autos simultaneously and not in phases as demanded by the operators.

The members of the committee after visiting Delhi and studying the pattern adopted there have concluded that Delhi did not adopt the ban on diesel/petrol auto-rickshaws in phases. Similar procedure will be adopted here after August 31,2009, STA Director and one of the members of the committee Vandana Disodia said.

Earlier,protesting against the Administrations decision of phasing out of petrol and diesel-run autorickshaws in Chandigarh,auto operators had stopped their services within the tricity.

The deadlock came to an end after five days after an assurance by the committee formed to look into the matter.

The committee consisted of five members from the Administration - S S Shrivastava,SSP Traffic,H S Doon,SP (Traffic),Vandana Disodia,STA Secretary,Additional Deputy Commissioner Capt (Retd) P S Shergill and M L Sharma,director,Transport.

Four representatives of the auto operators,including Joint Action Committee Chairman Kamala Kant,General Secretary Balbir Singh,Panchkula Auto Rickshaw Welfare Association Chairman Rohtash Singh and Mohali Auto Rickshaw Union President Om Prakash,were also appointed on the panel.

Various unions opposed the decision of phasing out of non-LPG auto-rickshaws in a single go arguing that Delhi administration adopted the similar procedure in phases giving some breather to autorickshaw operators.
