With an aim to reduce incidents of crime and make the city roads safe by keeping tabs on violators, the Chandigarh Police recently started night challaning of vehicles. The drive, which started on April 19,has seen over 392 violators being penalised by Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles.

Previously, violations on the city roads picked up after the Traffic Police left for the day. Thus, the PCR was entrusted with the responsibility of keeping the traffic violations under check. Initially, the drive started from midnight and continued till 4 am,but now it has been extended till 8 am after which the Traffic Police takes over the job.

The PCR had deployed its 60 PCR Gypsies in pairs on the main roads where violations are visible during the night. Apart from the Gypsies,10 motorcycles of the Cheetah squad have also been divided into five pairs and deployed on the inside roads of sectors.

The PCR has penalised a total of 59 persons during its drive after midnight on Saturday (April 28). While 27 persons were penalised during the night,32 were fined in the morning.

Till now,the majority of offenders caught by the PCR staff are two-wheeler riders, who are found riding without helmets. Over 290 such persons have been caught by the police while more than 12 vehicles have been impounded.

“Our main focus is to minimise the visible traffic violations on the roads. During the drive,we have observed a large number of violations near the ISBT-43 and -17,Sector 15 and 35,” said DSP (PCR) Roshan Lal.
