NGOs at Karuna Sadan a perturbed lot after rents hiked 10 times

City-based NGOs and other organisations operating from Karuna Sadan in Sector 11 were in for a rude shock after recent orders for a hike in the rent being charged.

City-based NGOs and other organisations operating from Karuna Sadan in Sector 11 were in for a rude shock after recent orders for a hike in the rent being charged. The NGOs will now have to pay 10 times the rent that they were paying so far.

The co-ordinator of an NGO stated that the rent had increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 per month. She added,“The NGOs are neither undertaking any commercial work at Karuna Sadan,nor are they into profit making. The hike should not have been so substantial. The authorities must reconsider the orders”.

Chandigarh Social Welfare Board also operates from the same building. Board chairperson Kamlesh said that they recently received the order regarding the hike in the rentals,which were not justified. She added that her office would write to the authorities concerned to appeal that the rent be reduced as it was not justified.
