Delay in NEET PG counselling leaves GMCH-32 students anxious
According to A K Atri, director-principal, GMCH-32, 35 seats of the state quota are vacant, but due to the top court’s decision, going ahead with the third round of counselling is not possible.

Anxiety and confusion have crept into postgraduate (PG) students of various medical courses. The medical students are blaming the third round of NEET PG counselling, which was scheduled for February 5 at Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 (GMCH-32), but has been postponed indefinitely. The first two rounds of counselling were completed on time, but the third round was put on hold after the Supreme Court (SC) verdict on
January 29, which barred domicile-based reservation in PG medical admissions under the state quota.
According to A K Atri, director-principal, GMCH-32, 35 seats of the state quota are vacant, but due to the top court’s decision, going ahead with the third round of counselling is not possible. Now the Chandigarh Administration is seeking clarification from the SC whether GMCH can continue counseling on the basis of the existing norms or not.
The effort is to conduct the third counselling on the basis of the same prospectus as the two counsellings done before the SC order.
The counselling for the all-India quota has already been completed, and the students selected there have taken admission in the respective institutes. But students of the state quota seats are still waiting. Most of the students are MBBS graduates and some come from the state domicile category. Many had given up the all-India quota seats to get admission in GMCH under the state quota. GMCH is the first choice of students because there is no service bond after completing the postgraduate program.
Expressing concern, one student says, “we are extremely worried about our future. The next exam is in June, and we were hopeful that we would get a seat, so we did not prepare for the exam again this year. If a solution is not found soon, our entire career will be at stake. The administration and GMCH should take a decision immediately and start the counseling process”.
The students demand that the GMCH administration should seek clarification from the SC as soon as possible and start the counselling process, so that their year is not wasted.
