Faced with a severe water crisis in several blocks of mid-hill districts and increased demand for irrigation facilities in cash crop growing areas, the Himachal Pradesh government on Monday claimed to have drawn up a multi-pronged strategy to ease the situation.

After tasting success in a few newly commissioned drinking water and irrigation projects, the government has decided to seek funding from the Centre and also propose some projects to agencies like NABARD for execution of the schemes.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said: “We are planning to take the integrated drinking water schemes to over 18 blocks where water scarcity is a perennial problem for the local administrations. The project will be implemented in a time-bound manner as every year the government has to spend huge amounts to engage tankers for supply of water to these areas.”

“The Lift Water Supply Scheme for pumping water from the Giri river was commissioned last year and the Rural Water Supply Scheme, which partly covers Mewa and Bamsan areas in Bhoranj teshil,is also in force. The Lift Water Supply Scheme from Guwardoo to Samirpur in Hamirpur has already been completed,” he added.
