More number of girl students are showing interest in joining defence services, state officials of city-based Service Selection Board (SSB) coaching academy Olive Greens Institute, during the celebrations of their 10th anniversary on Wednesday.

The director of the institute, Col Ashokan K, said, “The institute has seen a gradual increase in the number of girl students applying for Services Selection Board (SSB) coaching. About 10 years ago, there used to be three-four girl candidates, but now we see about 20-30 girl applicants in a batch of 40 students.”

He added that the clearance rate of girl students is more than 50 per cent in the institute. “In comparison to boys, girls are more focused, motivated and determined to clear the exam,” said the officer.

Gurleen Kaur, a student of the institute who just appeared for SSB interview of Air Force and is awaiting results, said, “I want to serve the nation, and the best way is by joining the defence services. I want to be recognised as an Air Force Officer,” she said.

The officials further said that students with an engineering background are also coming forward to join the defence services.

“In the region, many engineering colleges have come up, which produce a large number of engineering students every year. In the private sector, there are not many jobs left for them, and therefore, many opt for engineering jobs in defence,” said another official, adding that these days, candidates with technical background are given more preference in the Navy.

The institute has recently been conferred the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) certification by TUV Austria for quality training. It further claims of training over 18,000 candidates in the last 10 years, out of which about 6,000 have qualified SSB.
