Monday — which was the last day to submit property tax for the current financial year (2024-2025 or FY25) — saw the Zirakpur and Kharar municipal councils collecting over Rs 45 lakh and Rs 22 lakh respectively as the sum of outstanding property tax.

With the final day payments on March 31, Mohali has collected around Rs 50 crore in property tax, which is Rs 10 lakh more than expected in the previous budget, according to the Mayor.

Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu, when contacted, said that this year the municipal corporation (MC) has made “tremendous efforts” to collect property tax which has resulted in Rs 10 lakh more than expected. He said that in the new fiscal year, the Mohali civic earlier expected Rs 55 crore from property tax, but hopefully it will be able to collect more than Rs 60 crore.

Earlier, notices had been issued to individuals and businesses who had defaulted on property tax payments for the past 12 years. The councils had also warned that strict actions, including sealing properties if dues were not cleared by the deadline (March 31).

To facilitate payments, the municipal offices remained open on Saturday, Sunday, and even on Monday despite Eid being a holiday.

Providing further details, Zirakpur Municipal Council’s Executive Officer (EO) Ashok Pathria and Kharar Council EO Ravi Kumar Jindal, stated that strict measures were implemented to recover long-pending property tax arrears from defaulters. Notices for property sealing were issued to those who failed to pay within the stipulated time frame. This initiative aimed to ensure that all residents and businesses contribute their fair share to the city’s development.

“We are collecting Rs 5.92 crore in the ongoing financial year (as property tax), with an increase of 10 to 15 per cent compared to last year,” Jindal said.

On the final day, Pathria reported that the council’s office received Rs 27 lakh in cash and Rs 18 lakh through cheques, bringing the total collection to over Rs 45 lakh. This achievement highlights the corporation’s effective efforts in recovering long-overdue payments.

Pathria and Jindal expressed gratitude to their staff and all those who cleared their dues. They urged those who have yet to make payments to do so at the earliest. They also mentioned that the collected funds would be allocated towards the development and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure, including roads, sanitation, and other civic amenities.

They further emphasised that the Zirakpur and Kharar municipal councils remain committed to the city’s growth and development and will continue to take necessary measures to collect outstanding dues.
