In an anti-encroachment operation, the Mohali Municipal Corporation Friday removed long-standing illegal occupations from several parts of the city, including the main road dividing Phase 4 and Phase 2, an area where second-hand furniture sellers had allegedly occupied public space for years.

The “Tehbazaari team” cleared large quantities of illegally stored furniture placed by shop owners for commercial display, which had been obstructing traffic flow. According to officials, “local councillors had repeatedly raised complaints” about the area being misused as an extended marketplace.

Tehbazaari Superintendent Mandeep Singh said the crackdown is being carried out strictly under the directions of Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh. “Many people attempt to re-encroach even after being removed, but our teams are conducting continuous checks and taking action every day,” he said.

Singh added that the corporation’s top priority is to make all main roads from Phase 1 to Phase 11 encroachment-free, ensuring smooth traffic movement and restoring public spaces. Once major roads are cleared, similar action will be taken in markets, parking areas, footpaths and other public zones.

Municipal Corporation officials said the campaign will be intensified in the coming days. “Every possible step will be taken to make Mohali completely free of illegal encroachments,” they said.
