Raja Warring hit out at the AAP government, claiming Mohali’s law and order has collapsed and residents face frequent extortion threats. (Express Photo by Kamleshwar Singh) Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring launched a fierce attack on the AAP government during his Mohali visit, claiming that the city’s law and order has “collapsed beyond control”. He said Mohali has become a “hotspot for gangsters”, with residents receiving extortion calls regularly.
“Every fourth home gets a threat call. Only one out of a hundred reports it to the police. Rest of the people because of fear pay money and keep quiet,” Warring remarked, adding that the government is allowing crime to flourish.
Warring earlier in the day met Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi to discuss key constituency issues. During his visit, Bedi welcomed the Punjab president and also honoured him for his contribution to the Congress in Punjab.
Warring slammed the Centre for what he called “deliberate attempts” to weaken Punjab’s authority over Chandigarh. He said the new references under Article 25 and Article 240 aim to undermine Punjab’s constitutional rights.“Chandigarh was, is, and will remain Punjab’s capital. No one can snatch Punjab’s rights,”he asserted. He also criticised the Centre on Punjab University elections, BBMB reforms, the SYL issue and federal matters for “repeatedly trying to diminish Punjab’s autonomy”.
On the recent controversy during a party rally in which former minister, Balbir Singh Sidhu reportedly made remarks against Deputy Mayor, Warring said: “No one has the right to insult anyone. If something slips out of our tongue, we should apologise but such things should never happen. Bedi is a senior leader who has won four times as councillor and strengthened Congress at the grassroots”.
Speaking about the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the state Congress chief said the main contest will be between Congress and AAP, adding that Congress’s win of seven Lok Sabha seats shows people’s trust. On being asked if he would be the CM face, he stated that the decision belongs entirely to the Congress high command, which includes national party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, among others.
