Mohali deputy mayor highlights deficiencies in mechanical sweeping, urges action
He also requested the Commissioner to issue strict instructions to the contractor assigned the job of segregating wet and dry waste to perform his duties properly

Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written a letter to Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, urging immediate action on the issue of mechanical sweeping.
In his letter, Bedi stated that the contractor is repeatedly claiming that the garbage volume is higher, but he is being paid less, and hence he is demanding a 25% increase in his payment. He said that along with this, complaints are being received from across the city that wall-to-wall mechanical sweeping, as per the tender, is not being carried out by the contractor, and on some roads, proper cleaning is barely happening.
He said that the Municipal Corporation must take a clear decision on this matter, and if there is merit in the contractor’s claims, then his payment may be increased by 25% on a trial basis for some time. However, if the corporation is not in a position to do so, then the contractor’s contract should be cancelled and fresh tenders should be invited. He said that any delay in this matter is not appropriate because the filth in Mohali is continuously increasing, and while the garbage issue is already unresolved, now the problem of green waste may also take a serious turn.
In his letter, he said that if the approval of the House is required for this matter, then a meeting of the Municipal Corporation should be called immediately in consultation with the mayor, so that alternative arrangements can also be discussed in case the tender is cancelled and a decision can be reached.
He also requested the Commissioner to issue strict instructions to the contractor assigned the job of segregating wet and dry waste to perform his duties properly, failing which action should be taken against him as well and alternative arrangements should be made.
