Mobile police stations get 1,700 cases, dispose of 700

The mobile police stations have a monthly roaster to visit all the slum areas, including Hallomajra and Dadu Majra.

About a year and a month after the Chandigarh Police had launched the mobile police stations, the two mobile police vehicles have registered 1,700 cases.

This, despite the fact that the mobile police stations deal only with the non-cognisable offences (an offence in which the police cannot register an FIR or investigate without the directions of the court).

Inspector Sukhwinder Singh,in-charge of the two mobile police stations, says: “We have a monthly roaster of the two mobile police stations with the Chandigarh Police. A day in the month is fixed for the police station to visit one area. Now the residents also remember when the mobile police station will visit their area.”

Explaining the functioning of the mobile police station,Head Constable Amrik Singh, one of the munshis of a police station at Burail village, says: “Wherever the mobile police station goes, the beat in-charge of that area becomes the official in-charge of the mobile police station as well. He takes the decision for all the cases which come to the police station.”

Amrik says,“When any case which we cannot handle comes to our police station,we take the preliminary measures and call an investigating officer from the police station concerned.”

Ramesh,a resident of Burail village, says,“It was difficult for us to go to the police station. We had to spend on conveyance, and it took at least three visits to get a copy of the DDR even for a lost ration card. Now we know when the police station will be coming and the best part is that we get a copy of the DDR then and there.”

In order that the residents know when the mobile police van will be visiting their locality, the beat constables while patrolling in the area announce and inform the residents. The two mobile police stations visit a different place each day and are stationed there from 9 am to 5 pm. Each place is visited after every 14 days.

The mobile police stations, since February 2 last year till March this year, received nearly 1,700 complaints out of which 700 were disposed of by the mobile police station staff.
