Keeping in view the increased rates of petrol and diesel, the Punjab government is going to increase bus fares in the state. Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal said this here on Tuesday.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the minister said: “The government wants to increase the fare by 10 paisa per km as both Punjab Roadways and PEPSU Roadways are facing financial crunch. However,I have recommended to increase the fares by 4 paisa per km. The file is pending with the chief minister and a final decision will be taken after discussion in the coming session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha.”

The minister, who was in Ludhiana to preside over a seminar on ‘Road Safety: Need of the Hour’,jointly organised by the Punjab State Road Safety Council and the Christian Medical College and Hospital, said: “To include ‘traffic awareness’ as a subject in the college curriculum,I will hold a meeting of the vice-chancellors of different universities.”

Talking about local bus service in five major cities of Punjab,he said: “The project is with the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation and the Pepsu Roadways Transport Corporation. I hope the local bus service will be made available to the public after the Vidhan Sabha session.” Master Mohan Lal added that the department was going to start online booking for the PEPSU Roadways from September 23.
