Councillor Arshad Khan had earlier suggested installing GPS in vehicles of the civic body a number of times in the MC House. He said officials would be able to keep track of the movement of vehicles.

Councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma said the sanitation committee had approved the agenda for installation of GPS in vehicles of the sanitation wing during a meeting last year. “The committee had approved installation of GPS in vehicles of the sanitation wing. We had recommended that it could be done for other vehicles too,” said Sharma.

The move would ensure the vehicles were following the prescribed route for collection of garbage. The councillors have,at times, raised the issue of garbage not being collected regularly from all locations. Installation of GPS would ensure the vehicles could be monitored.

The time period for which the vehicles stopped at a particular spot would also be known. This would help prevent misuse of official vehicles. In case of fire tenders, the information would prove helpful during a crisis situation.
