The Municipal Corporation (MC) may not have implemented recommendations regarding conducting study tours in the past, but this does not seem to be a deterrent for proposing another study tour.
The civic body has proposed that while one group of councillors visit Bangalore and Coimbatore, another visit Chennai and Pondicherry.
The councillors had gone on a study tour in October last year while one group visited Gangtok and Kolkata, the other went Thiruvanthapuram and Cochin. These tours had generated a lot of controversy. The group that had gone to Gangtok and Kolkata had proposed a system which could be used to generate energy for creating electricity.
The other group had made proposals regarding waste management. This included segregation of waste at source, bringing improvements in the garbage processing plant and having a feedback system before implementing the projects. None of these proposals have seen the light of the day.
According to Councillor Harjinder Kaur, the councillors submit proposals but the implementation part is not in their hands. It is important for the councillors to tour various places,as it enhances their knowledge about the systems in place at different places. We have been making proposals, but it is for the Mayor to take initiative and officials to implement the suggestions, she added.
The recent proposal was to be approved during this months House Meet. However, due to disruptions it could not get through. Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh
said: Since the agenda was not discussed this time, the study tours will be undertaken once the House gives its approval.
Earlier,on a trip to Singapore and Bangkok, the councillors had proposed to build a park for the visually-impaired. When the park was finally approved, the councillors rued it was not what they had proposed.
