If you have whitewashed your house and the paint peels off,you can do more than just fret over the poor quality of paint. A villager living near Bassi Pathana knocked the doors of the consumer court and also got a relief of approximately Rs 16,000 for bad paint.
President of Punjab Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Justice S N Aggarwal and members Amarpreet Sharma and Baldev Singh Sekhon have directed the Jalandhar-based manufacturer of the paint to compensate the villager for his loss, and the harassment suffered by him.
Major Singh,a resident of Khalaspur village near Bassi Pathana, purchased colour from a dealer in Ladhewali village in Jalandhar district for Rs 9,520 in 2004. He got his house whitewashed using this material, spending Rs 10,000 as labour charges. Within two months, however, the paint started peeling off. Major Singh filed a complaint in the Consumer Forum,Fatehgarh Sahib, after the dealer refused to refund his expenses, along with labour charges.
In its reply, the dealer told the forum that he had told the manufacturer about Major Singhs complaint, but the latter took no action, adding that only the Jalandhar-based manufacturer should be penalised for the bad paint.
In its reply, the manufacturer claimed that he was not aware whether Major Singh had got his house whitewashed using his product and urged to dismiss the complaint. Adjudicating the case, the forum directed the manufacturer to pay Rs 9,520 for the bad quality of paint and Rs 5,000 for the harassment caused to him. The manufacturer appealed against the order in the Punjab Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, which dismissed it.
