The first thing that you take note of Mangal Dhillon was his captivating presence and his baritone that was difficult to forget, says Dr Balbir Shah, a retired pathologist from DMCH, Ludhiana, as he remembers the multi-faceted actor who passed away recently.

While talking to The Indian Express, Dr Shah says, “I met him a number of times in my life, and every time I used to get impressed with his speaking voice which was so pleasant to listen to. He was a versatile actor and famous too, yet so simple and down-to-earth with no pretensions. The first time I met him was about 10 years ago at Ramgarhia Girls College at a function on the campus. The then principal Harmeet Kaur had invited him. And we hit it off right away. As I kept on meeting him, I could see his spiritual side as well.”

Mangal Dhillon was an actor, director, writer and producer who showcased his talent in several Hindi and Punjabi films. He acted in many TV serials, including the popular Buniyaad. Other serials included Katha Sagar, Junoon, Kismat, The Great Maratha, Mulana Azad, Noorjahan, etc. He acted in about 30 Hindi and Punjabi films. While he had his early education from Panjgraiyan Kalan Government School in Kotkapura, he graduated from Government College Muktsar. He joined the theatre department of Punjab University and completed a postgraduate diploma course in acting. In 1980, he married artiste Rita Dhillon, and they have a son and a daughter. Dr Shah says, “My wife and I run Shah Nursing Home. Mangal Dhillon used to meet me there. He used to bring many patients to our nursing home as he was concerned about the health of people around him.

During such meetings we used to discuss day-to-day problems like how to rid the society of drug abuse. He was aware of the problems of farmers and had concern for them. He used to talk about corruption and deteriorating ethical values in society. Perhaps he had plans to work on these subjects as well, but life is short, you never know what is going to happen next moment. Many a time he used to deliver his film dialogues and entertained us. I was highly impressed with his simplicity.”
