A police source said that Chauhan took her to one of his rooms where he allegedly raped the woman after promising marriage. Police in Himachal Pradesh have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly raping a tourist from Poland on the pretext of marriage.
Kartik Chauhan, a resident of Upper Bhagsu in Dharamshala was arrested Friday, a day after the 39-year-old Polish woman lodged a police complaint.
The woman came to India on a tourist visa last month and arrived in McLeodganj two weeks ago where she was staying at a rented accommodation, the police said. According to the police, Chauhan owns several rooms in McLeodganj that he rents out to tourists. He allegedly met the woman at a local shop and offered her one of his rooms as she was facing problems where she had been staying.
A police source said that Chauhan took her to one of his rooms where he allegedly raped the woman after promising marriage. “Forensic experts have collected samples from the room. The accused is being questioned and the Poland embassy has been informed,” the source added.
Kangra Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri, said, “The victim is a foreign national. She came to India on a tourist visa for recreational activities. We have verified her allegations. The initial investigation has established the crime. The victim’s statement under Section 164 of CrPC was recorded before a local magistrate. It has come to light that they were in contact for the last two weeks. Further probe is on”.
McLeodganj is a famous tourist location where Tsuglag Khang, home to the Dalai Lama, is situated. Thousands of foreign nationals visit the area every year.
