The Chandigarh Police on Friday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of chain snatchers,which it said has led to the solving of 20 cases of chain snatching and one case of vehicle theft.
According to the police,the main accused,Vicky,a resident of village ValliPur (UP) was arrested from near Centra Mall,Industrial Area,Phase-I on June 6 at around 3 pm. Till date,20 snatched gold chains and stolen Pulsar Motorcycle have been recovered from the accused.
On April 14,Sandeep Rana,a resident of Behlana village had complained about motorcycle theft from Sector 30.
Later,an FIR was registered under Section 473 (making or possessing counterfeit seal,etc,with intent to commit forgery punishable otherwise),379 (punishment for theft),411(dishonestly receiving stolen property) IPC at Police station,Industrial Area, Chandigarh Police said.
At the time of arrest,the accused had displayed a fake number on the motorcycle. During interrogation,it has been revealed that the accused Vicky along with his accomplice Suraj of Uttar Pradesh,who is presently absconding,used to snatch gold chains from different areas of the city by using a stolen motorcycle.
As per the police report,Vicky has a previous criminal record. Besides the above mentioned cases,the accused has already been arrested by the Chandigarh Police in 47 cases of snatching and theft registered against him in various police stations of the city.
Out of these 47 cases,in 27 cases he has been convicted and in two cases he jumped bail and was consequently declared a Proclaimed Offender in both the cases.
Vicky has also been arrested in various cases by the Panchkula and Mohali Police.
Vicky is on police remand up to June 17. Further interrogation is going on to find out his involvement in other criminal cases. However,the other accused,Suraj,is at large and efforts are being made by the police to arrest him.
