Campaigning for SAD-BSP joint candidate Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll here on Tuesday, former minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia said the fact that a large number of Congress leaders and workers were leaving the grand old party to join SAD is a testimony to the fact that the Chaudhary family had failed to deliver the goods during its nearly 30-year dominance in this constituency.

The bypoll was necessitated due to the untimely demise of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary in January this year. His wife Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary is the Congress candidate for the upcoming by-election.

Addressing a public meeting in Kartarpur where Congress workers joined SAD en masse, Majithia said, “People want to support a party and a leader who have a proven track record of performance. The Chaudhary family has failed to do anything concrete during the last nine years. In contrast, people are aware of the manner in which former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal helped the farmers and weaker sections by providing free power for tube wells, besides implementing social welfare schemes like ‘aata-daal’, old age pension, shagun and cycles for girl students.”

Asking the people to compare the candidates in the fray, Majithia said, “Sukhi has a proven track record in the Vidhan Sabha where he has taken up people’s issues successfully. He is also known for his social work. As a renowned doctor, he has been serving people selflessly for decades.” In contrast, both AAP and BJP candidates were turncoats and can’t be trusted, he added.

Coming down heavily on the AAP government and CM Bhagwant Mann, the senior SAD leader (Majithia) said forget releasing Prof Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar (Sikh political prisoner), whose release orders were lying on Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s desk for the last one year and a half, the government had imposed the draconian NSA on innocent Sikh youths. Asserting that the AAP government had befooled people of Punjab in the name of ‘badlav’ (change) and ‘ek mauka’ (one chance), the former minister said, “Instead of improving education and health services in Punjab, the AAP government had opened 1,800 new wine shops in the state.”

Sukhi said, “The AAP government has betrayed each and every section of the society. Be it women, youths, weaker sections, farmers, government employees or trade and industry – everyone was promised the moon, but today nobody is over the moon, thanks to its failed promises.”

Asserting that AAP had lost its moral right to even ask women for their vote, Sukhi said, “AAP had promised women (18 and above 18) an allowance of Rs 1,000 per month before coming to power in the state. If one goes by this promise, it owes a woman falling in this age bracket Rs 12,000 a year.

The AAP government should deposit this amount in these women’s accounts before May 10 in order to seek their votes. He said the government had also befooled the youths as it had given jobs only on compassionate grounds. “The much-promised recruitment has not taken place. Even services of employees on contract have not been regularised,” Sukhi added.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party of India on Tuesday announced its decision to support SAD-BSP joint candidate Sukhi in the forthcoming bypoll.
