The entire meaning of an electoral process seems to have been lost when it comes to the upcoming students elections at Panjab University. Barring a couple of parties, student groups have even failed to find interested candidates for contesting the elections. The current scenario can be attributed to the disinterest among students coupled with unawareness. Add to this, the Lyngdoh committee guidelines which has played a significant role in this rather low key atmosphere on the campus.
Interestingly, there are parties that have declared their panels only for the sake of contesting elections and be a part of the entire process. These include NSUI-HPSU,which has fielded contestants who are members of neither party.
Meanwhile, the SOPU-INSO alliance lost their presidential candidate Rajwinder Singh Johal, after his
nomination was cancelled due to shortage of lectures,NSUI too had to lose their presidential candidate Geeta for the same reasons.
As per the Lyngdoh committee report,no candidate whose attendance is short can contest in the elections. With the Lyngdoh report having being implemented for three years now,the students still dont seem to be clear on its rules. There are parties who filled seventeen nominations in all for different posts to be on the safer side.
While it has streamlined students elections to a great extent and violence that used to be a major part of students polls has stopped,it also has taken away the real flavour of elections. With no printed material allowed,no vehicle rallies the elections are more or less colourless, said Anupreet one of the students at PU campus. Similar scenes prevail at the colleges in the city as well where Lyngdoh restrictions have been put in place.
Also,in these elections the monopoly of law department on the students polls seems to have ended with students from Sanskrit and Music department coming forward to contest elections.
NSUI-HPSU had Rajbir from the Sanskrit department contesting for the presidential post, however the party withdrew his name at the time of withdrawals. Commenting on the withdrawal,NSUI state president Nitin Goyal said,It is because of some personal reasons that we withdrew our presidential candidate.
However, other party leaders state that the move was initiated by NSUI-HPSU since they apprehended that their candidate was not strong. Though the NSUI-HPSU alliance still has its joint secretary candidate,Rohit from the music department.
