Ludhiana: Three workers dead, two critical as fire breaks out in hosiery factory
The incident took place in Ram Nagar locality of Civil Lines where the factory was functioning from a two-storey building in a residential area.

Three workers died and two others were critical after a massive fire broke out in a hosiery factory in Ludhiana on Tuesday, police said. While two of the victims died of asphyxiation, the third was charred to death. The incident took place in Ram Nagar locality of Civil Lines where the factory was functioning from a two-storey building in a residential area.
It took 30 fire fire tenders more than six hours to bring the flames under control. While the raw material and goods lying in the factory were gutted, cracks also appeared in the building due to the fire. It is suspected that an electric short-circuit may have caused the fire.
Fire department officials said that they received a call at 1.32 pm regarding a massive fire that had broken out at the Ganesh Trading Corporation, a readymade garments and hosiery unit near Pavilion Mall.
“Flames had engulfed the entire building by the time we reached the spot,” said fire station officer Maninder Singh, adding that five persons who were working inside the unit were rescued and rushed to hospitals.
Of the four rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), two died. The emergency unit staff at DMCH confirmed that Mohinder Kumar and Ravinder Chopra died during treatment. “Both died of asphyxiation and had no burn injuries,” said Jeevan Kumar, emergency casualty supervisor, DMCH. Two others — Ashwani and Gulshan Kumar — are on ventilator and their condition is very serious,” he added.
The body of the fifth person was taken to Ludhiana Civil Hospital. “The body is charred and beyond recognition and we are yet to ascertain if the deceased is a male or a female. The person died of burn injuries on the spot,” said Dr Charan Kamal, forensic expert at Civil Hospital.
Inspector Vijay Kumar, SHO Division No. 8 police station said that the cause of fire is being investigated. “We are verifying if the unit was running without permission in a residential area,” said the SHO.
Additional DCP-1 Shubham Aggarwal said that an FIR against the factory owner was being registered under the section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) at division number 8 police station.
