(Express Photo) Despite teaching a subject that isn’t given required importance in the government schools of Punjab, Amritpal Singh (41), a computer science teacher posted at Government Senior Secondary School, Chhapar in Pakhowal block of Ludhiana, has been making unique efforts from past 17 years to make the subject interesting for his students.
From running a unique networking computer lab in his school, developing mobile games for learning to writing four books, Amritpal Singh, will be honored with the National Award on Teacher’s Day at Delhi by the Union ministry of education. He is the only government school teacher from Punjab who has been selected for the honor this year. A total of 50 teachers from across the country will be honored.
Amritpal Singh, a computer science faculty member, had joined the state education department in 2006. He was posted at Chhapar school in Ludhiana in 2009 and since then he has taken several initiatives in the school to develop interest of students in computer science. Amriptal said that he has been running a unique project “ICT Parvaaz”, under which he has created a self-assessment tool questionnaire, which students can access online and take a test to know their weak areas. “A total of 9.90 lakh students from across Punjab have used this tool till now which helps them to identify topics which need more practise,” he says.
He has also developed a computer park in his school and developed 30 mobile phone games which help students in revising topics related to computer science. “More than three lakh students are using these games to learn the subject,” he says. He is running a “thin client networking computer lab” in his school which was developed for Rs 1.70 lakh which came through donations.
He is also credited for making his students participate in several cultural activities and his students have won at least 215 medals till date in several events and cultural festivals. He also ensures that Children With Special Needs (CWSN) also participate in such activities. He is also making his students learn cultural activities related to Punjabi heritage.
Amritpal has also written four books till now of which three are poetry books and one “Virus Novel” is a novel related to computer science. Honored with a state award by the Punjab government in 2021, he has also made several short films to make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) easier for students.

Another teacher who will be honored with a National Award on Teacher’s Day from Punjab is Bhupinder Gogia, principal of Sat Paul Mittal School, Dugri, Ludhiana. She will be getting the honor under the CISCE board category. An experienced school principal, she holds expertise in strategic planning, curriculum development, public speaking, teacher training, and research. She holds a degree in Master of Science (MSc) focused in Applied Mathematics from University of Hyderabad and Master of education from Panjab University.
