Local BJP leader shot dead in Haryana’s Sonipat over land dispute

BJP leader Surender Jawahra (File photo by Manoj Dhaka)A local BJP leader, Surender Jawahra, 42, was shot dead in Haryana’s Sonipat district on Friday, allegedly over a land dispute with his neighbour. Jawahra was the Mundlana block president of the BJP.
The incident took place in Jawahra village of Sonipat district at around 9 pm on Friday when Jawahra was at his shop, the police said, adding that his neighbour Mannu has been arrested for the crime.
The police said that Jawahra had purchased agricultural land from Mannu’s aunt and uncle and a dispute was going on between the two over this.
A source said Mannu was against the land deal and had warned Jawahra against going ahead with the plan. “The accused had warned Surender not to enter the disputed land. However, he cultivated the land on Friday. Just a few hours later, this crime took place,” the source said.
A purported CCTV clip of the incident shows the accused opening fire and Jawahra collapsing.
“We had received information about a firing in Jawahra village on Friday evening in which the village numberdar Surender had received two bullets. The police have lodged an FIR on the complaint of his wife Komal,” Rishi Kant, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gohana, said.
“A court case is ongoing over the land dispute. The police have formed three teams to take action. The main accused Mannu has been arrested and he is being interrogated,” he added.
Apart from looking after his agricultural land, Jawahra was also running a small grocery shop at his village. Jawahra is survived by his parents, wife and three children.
