The foot-over-bridges installed at different places in Mohali are not being put to adequate use by the residents.
The bridges were recently installed by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) with the aim to facilitate residents to cross roads without having to manoeuvre through traffic.
Although the public opinion favours the project the public usage is another story. People are seen running across the road rather than using the bridge.
The common response of pedestrians was that it was easier to run across the road than to climb the bridges. For senior citizens especially, climbing the bridge is not an easy task.
The bridges will only become useful once the local bus service begins in Mohali. At present with there being no road dividers, the residents find it easy to cross the road instead of climbing the bridges, said Navdeep Singh, resident of Mohali.
Tarlochan Singh,Chief Engineer of GMADA said,We will soon be installing divider railings so that people will be left with no option, but to use over the bridges. We have also made landings in the steps,so that it is easier for people to climb.
