All work in the district courts of Panchkula was at a stand-still due to a day-long strike by lawyers. The call for the strike was given by the Bar Council of India.
The strike disappointed many litigants, who had turned up to the various courts functioning under the district court. The judges held the court as usual but most cases were put off to other dates,as lawyers were absent.
I had reached court around 10.30 am and was waiting for an hour outside a courtroom. And when our case came for hearing, the lawyer did not turn up. I inquired and was told that lawyers are on a strike, said a litigant from Maheeshpur,Panchkula.
Other litigants who had turned up from various villages also fumed over the inconvenience. We did know anything about the strike. We have come from a far away village to appear before the court, but our case was not taken up today, said a litigant from Barwala village.
The lawyers, however, said that every one was informed in advance about the strike. The strike was observed country wide and people were told in advance about the strike. And in Panchkula also the strike was successful, said, the Joint Secretary of the Panchkula Bar Association,Jyoti.
The lawyers observed a country-wide strike to protest the Legal Practitioners Bill,2010,and the Higher Education and Research Bill,2011.
