Many private players have signed MoUs for setting up thermal power plants in Punjab Giving a fillip to power generation in Punjab,Punjab State Power Corporation has signed yet another Memorandum of Understanding with Lanco Infratech of Hyderabad,for setting up a 1320 MW (2X660 MW) coal-based thermal power plant in Kot Shamir in Bathinda district. PSPCL chairman and managing director K.D. Chaudhri said the plant would be set up in 1200 acres of land and will get water from Phul Distributary of Bathinda Branch of the Sirhind Canal. He said that Super-critical Technology will be used in the plant which is super efficient and low emission and the chimneys will be of 270 metres height so as to minimise pollution. Coal for the plant shall be arranged by the developer. The first unit of the plant is likely to start generation in 40 months time and the second unit in 44 months time,he said. Chaudhry added that the Punjab government has framed a new power generation policy under which more and more developers are ready to invest in Punjab,which will also help in generation of employment opportunities for the youth,besides making the state power-surplus. He added that,from the year 2012 onwards,new generation plants in the state will start generating power to mark a step in the direction of fulfilling the dream of making Punjab power-surplus. The MoU for the plant was signed in the presence of KD Chaudhri,CMD,PSPCL by Gurbachan Singh Chhabra,Director/Generation,PSPCL and Ravi Shankar,Director,M/s Lanco Infratech Limited,Hyderabad. Among others present were Kamaljit Singh,Er-in-Chief,SK Bagga,Deputy Chief Engineer of PSPCL,and Harpreet Singh Walia,AGM,M/s Lanco Infratech Limited.
