With dreams of making it big and not letting economic hardships be a deterrent in their path,these children from the slums of Bapu Dham are striving towards a bright future. Four students of Kitab Ghar,an initiative of NGO Yuvsatta,have cleared Class X exam this year.
Jubilation was writ large on their faces,as the result was announced. The Kitab Ghar provides these children all possible opportunities and facilities. I want to be a lawyer to serve the society. I talk a lot and that is another reason for choosing this profession, quipped Renu.
Daughter of a labourer,Renu says becoming a lawyer would enable her to help the underprivileged in society. She said,My father has gone through many hardships to help me study. I want to ensure a good life for my family.
Another such achiever is Poonam,whose father sells gol gappas and bhel puri. Having received B1 grade,Poonam says her father is very proud today. She has a number of achievements to her credit. She is an active reporter in the wall newspaper Jugnu that the NGO brings out. She was one of the four young reporters selected by UNICEF for a conference held in 2007.
Poonam wants to be self-dependent. She said,I have been able to learn a lot at Kitab Ghar. I take training in English conversation and have become good at it. The experience at the UNICEF conference was something that I would always cherish. Meanwhile,another student,Neha,dreams of becoming a dancer.
Her father works in a factory in Ambala. Jyoti Pal,whose father is a labourer,has also passed the exam with flying colours.
Parmod Sharma,co-ordinator of Yuvsatta,said the facilities for children were being increased.
