Chandigarh Member of Parliament Kirron Kher has once again come under fire for her use of “harsh language” during a recent foundation stone-laying ceremony at Kishangarh.

Kher, who was addressing the audience, used phrases such as “laanat hai” and “chhittar ferne chahiye” while referring to voters.
Kher was accompanied by Chandigarh Mayor Anup Gupta and Municipal Commissioner Anindita Mitra when she used these words. She was speaking about the development work she had done for the residents of Deep Complex in Chandigarh.

During her speech, Kher stated, “Agar Deep Complex mein mujhe ek bhi banda vote na dale, to badi laanat ki baat hai. Jaakar chhittar ferne chahiye unko (If no one from Deep Complex votes for me, it will be a highly shameful thing. They need to be beaten up with shoes).”

Kher had gone to lay the foundation stone for fixing of paver blocks at Kishangarh.

Following the release of a video of Kher using these words, the Congress criticised her remarks. City Youth Congress president Manoj Lubana stated, “This is the first time in nine years that Kirron Kher came to Kishangarh. No development work has taken place during these nine years. Now she wants votes by hook or by crook. See her tone. See her hooliganism.”

This is not the first time that Kher has faced criticism for her use of language. In June 2022, Kher had referred to AAP councillors as “dunger” (animals) during a press conference. She had criticised their conduct at the first House meeting of Chandigarh stating, “They were breaking tables and glasses. I have never seen such junglipana. Aisa lag raha tha jaise waha dunger ghum rahe the (it appeared as if animals were roaming there).”

The AAP had called for an apology from Kher.

Protest against Kher remarks

The Chandigarh Youth Congress Thursday held a symbolic protest at Chandigarh Bhawan against a statement made by MP Kher.

Under the leadership of Chandigarh Youth Congress president Manoj Lubana, members of the organisation offered their shoes to MP Kirron Kher. They said that BJP works on the “Aap humein vote do, hum aapko jootey maarenge”. “So we are offering her our shoes,” the pretesters said.

The Chandigarh Youth Congress maintained that the language used by the MP is unconstitutional, distasteful and brackish in nature.
Lubana said, “It is very simple. This is how BJP works, it’s in front of us. Now BJP MP has said it herself. She is openly threatening voters with assault.”

Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky said that Chandigarh is a city of educated people and such a remark from the MP was in a bad taste . Lucky demanded that the MP should immediately tender an unconditional apology to the people of Chandigarh.

AAP demands apology

AAP leader Prem Garg condemned the language of Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher and said that it was regrettable that the mayor and officials were laughing at her comment.

“Even more regrettable was the fact that the mayor and officials present there, instead of expressing their annoyance at the use of such derogatory language, were seen laughing out loud. No one bothered to stop or interrupt her for speaking like that. Kirron Kher’s arrogance was so high that she was showing as if she was distributing alms to the public from her personal earnings. The fact is that the behaviour of BJP MPs has always touched low levels,” Garg said.

Garg said, “This time not only people of Deep Complex but entire public of Chandigarh will give a befitting reply to BJP for the insults by their leaders. ”

While demanding an unconditional apology from the BJP MP for insulting the people of Chandigarh, the AAP said that they have decided to burn an effigy of the MP. “The party may also present a pair of shoes to the MP, so that she can fulfil her desire upon not getting votes from the public,” AAP said.
