Kargil hero Capt Vikram Batra’s mother passes away

Kamal Kant Batra was a retired government teacher and had briefly entered politics when she fought the Lok Sabha elections on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2014 general elections. She lost the election but quit the party later citing differences with the manner it was run.

Kamal Kant Batra, mother of Kargil Param Vir Chakra awardee Capt Vikram Batra, passed away at her home in Palampur in Himachal Pradesh today after a cardiac arrest. She was 77.

Speaking to The Indian Express her husband, GL Batra, said she had experienced some chest and back pain the previous night but had taken some medicine for gastric relief. “She had no history of cardiac ailments. She felt some relief after taking medicine at night and this morning too she took another medicine and said she felt better. However, even as we were contemplating to visit the hospital for a check—up, she passed away at around 1 PM this afternoon,” he said.

Capt Vikram Batra had shot to national fame in the Kargil conflict in 1999 when he took part in two key operations back to back to wrest strategic heights back from the Pakistan Army infiltrators. His iconic wireless message of ‘Ye Dil Maange More’ after his first success had captured the imagination of the nation.

Capt Batra died during the operation to capture Point 4875 on July 7, 1999. He was posthumously awarded the nation’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu posted his condolences on the death of Capt Batra’s mother on social media platform X. “Received the sad news of the death of Capt Vikram Batra’s mother. We pray to God to give strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” he wrote.

GL Batra said his son Vishal Batra, a twin of Capt Vikram Batra, has arrived in Palampur upon learning the news of his mother’s demise. “My daughter Seema has also arrived from Mandi. The cremation will take place tomorrow at noonin Palampur,” he said.
