Jakhar meets Chidambaram over Bluestar Memorial,MC polls

Stating that the recent turns of events in Punjab are pointer towards destabilisation of the hard earned peace and harmony in the state,Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar in a memorandum to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday, claimed that the Punjab government had remained a mute spectator and the Akali leadership a conniving partner to the event of raising the Bluestar Memorial and honouring of former chief minister Beant Singh’s assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana as a living martyr.

Saying that Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal even went public to justify such an event, the memorandum added: “This has not only given severe blow to the psyche of peace loving Hindu and Sikhs, but also instilled a sense of fear. The tactic support of government to such events is being seen as return of days of militancy and support to disruptive elements in Punjab.”

Jakhar also drew the attention of the home ministry on recent civic polls, saying the way they were conducted could trigger unrest and cause irreparable damage to Punjab.

“There was complete breakdown of law and order in the local bodies elections. The state Election Commission and state administration were mute spectator to the blatant and brute force unleashed by Akali workers, along with state police,to highjack local bodies elections.

“The PPCC chief’s convoy was attacked,MLAs and MPs assaulted and voters scared away,” he said, while asking the ministry to personally monitor such acts.
