The Ranjit Sagar Dam (RSD) project has achieved a new record of 153.97 lakh units in single-day power generation from its four units.

The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has been operating all the four units round the clock for the last 10 days. On Monday, power generated from the RSD units was 153.97 lakh units which is a single-day record.

On Tuesday, power generation was 153.4 lakh units while on Wednesday it was 150 lakh units. The PSPCL is unning all the four units of 150 MW each over and above its declared value and is generating 160 MW each as there is a cushion of 10 per cent over declared value, said V K Gupta, spokesperson of All Indian Power Engineers Federation.

“It is all-time high power generation on any single day at RSD projects. PSPCL has managed to keep the spillage at its lowest point. Now all the four units of 150 each are generating 160 MW, each making full use of 10 per cent extra design limits,” said Gupta.

The water level in RSD is 524.64 metres which is an increase of 11.5 metres in the last 10 days. The inflow in the reservoir on Wednesday was 27,122 cusecs while discharge through the turbine was 21,083 cusecs. The discharge in Ravi river through one-metre opening of one floodgate is 6,000 cusecs.

The water level in Bhakra reservoir on Sutlej river is 1,647 feet against last year’s level of 1,583 feet on corresponding day on Wednesday. The dam’s level has increased by around 44 feet between July 8 and July 11. The inflow in Bhakra reservoir is 60,500 cusecs.

At Pong reservoir on Beas river, the water level is 1,373.5 feet against last year’s figure of 1,316 feet. The Pong level has increased by 36 feet in the past two weeks ever since heavy rain hit the region. It was 1,337 .70 feet on July 7.

The inflow in the Pong reservoir is 55,300 cusecs. On Thursday, 39,356 cusescs was released from Pong, including 18,022 cusec through turbines where power is generated and 21,334 cusec through spillway.

Earlier when the inflow was up to 3 lakh cusec in the Pong dam, no water was released downstream in the Beas river because of the heavy rain in the state. Also, the dam had enough coushion to store the water. But now the dam authorities have started releasing water in order to keep some space in it as over two months of monsoons are still left in the state while the dam is around 15 feet below its upper limit.
