The district police claimed to have busted a gang which used to defraud people by making fake documents of PAN card and income tax returns. Ropar SSP L K Yadav said the police party led by Kiratpur Sahib SHO,Gurmeet Singh,stopped a car coming from Ropar side at a checkpost which was being driven by one Ashok Kumar of Bhao Akbarpur village in Rohtak. During the search,two registration certificates were recovered from the car. The engine number and chasis number written in both the RCs were same while the model and the year of registration were different. During interrogation,Kumar revealed that he and his associates Dharminder of Gurgaon,Gaurav of Rohtak,Rajinder of Rohtak and Rakesh Kumar of Kathura (Gohana) prepared fake PAN cards,income tax returns and other documents and used them to procure bank loans for purchasing vehicles. Yadav said the gang had bought 13 vehicles and not paid the loan instalments. Earlier,former president of the Mansa Truck Union Nachhattar Singh and one Sukhwinder Singh of Budladha,were arrested for assisting the gang,the SSP said.

Drug smuggler held,32-kg opium recovered
The police have arrested notorious drug smuggler Paramjit Singh Pamma of Ludhiana and claimed to have recovered 32 kilograms opium from him. Ropar SSP L K Yadav said checkposts were laid on receiving information that one Pamma was coming to Anandpur Sahib to supply drugs. A case has been registered against him at the Anandpur Sahib police station in this regard. Yadav claimed that the accused was a proclaimed offender,adding that a dozen unused SIM cards and three mobile phones were also recovered from him.

New software launched
UEI Global signed up with NewTecSol,the Indian technology subsidiary of Israeli based New Equity Services,to launch the first online Bachelor in Business Management and short term programmes in travel and tourism in the online format. It is developed by the Israeli knowledge control software company.

Business summit held
Dr IT Group of Institutes organized its 3rd National Conference and Business Summit on ‘Value based organization’ today at PHD Chamber in Chandigarh. The Chairman of Dr IT group,M K Mahajan,welcomed Dr Rajneesh Arora,Vice Chancellor,Punjab Technical University and Ashok Khanna,owner of Khanna Watches Ltd and other eminent speakers present from different corporates. Dr Arora said in 2010,50 new colleges would be opened in engineering and management field. The foreign universities will be allowed to venture jointly but not allow them to exploit the students of Punjab.

204 donate blood at camp
Sant Nirankari Mandal organized the second blood donation camp of Chandigarh zone at Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan,Mauli Jagran Road ,Manimajra. As many as 204 volunteers including 25 women donated blood. Mayor Anu Chatrath inaugurated the camp. A team of doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32 was present.

World Laughter Day celebrated
World Laughter Day was celebrated in the city today. Laughter club members gathered at Fragrance Garden ,Sector 36 and walked in the garden laughing,clapping and dancing. At the end of the march,a 10-minute laughter session was held. Parth Narula,Rupinder Kaur and M I Arora were declared winners of the best laughter competition.

Nitin Gadkari in UT on May 12
The President of the Chandigarh unit of BJP Sanjay Tandon held a meeting of former presidents and general secretaries of the unit to discuss preparations for visit of all-India president of the party Nitin Gadkari who is scheduled to visit the city on May 12. Tandon said the workers from the booth level to the state level were being mobilized for the rally.

400 examined at health camp
Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association organised a medical camp at Government Model High School at Vikas Nagar,Mauli Jagran. More than 400 people were examined at the camp by a team of doctors from Fortis Hospital. The association has been organising a series of camps at different parts of the city as part of the P H Vaishnav Memorial Week. This was the fourth and the last camp. President of the association Maj Gen M S Kandal (Retd) said that the aim of organizing the socio-medical camps was to help the poor and needy in the society. He added that with assistance from the UT Administration and various medical institutes a number of camps have been organized.

Ropar Press Club to hold seminar on Baba Banda Singh Bahadur
Rupnagar Press Club will organise a state-level seminar to mark the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s Sirhind Fateh Divas tercentenary on May 9. According to Rupnagar press club secretary Bahadurjeet Singh,Punjab Minister for Jails,Tourism and Culture,Printing and Stationery Hira Singh Gabria will be the chief guest and former SGPC president,Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar will preside over the seminar. Advisor to the Chief Minister,Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema will be the special guest.

One held for man’s murder in Sector 40
Two days after 27-year-old Ram Kumar was found dead,the police arrested one Varjit Singh alias Sunny from Sector 56 on Saturday. The police are now searching for Sandeep Kumar,another man suspected for the murder. The murder reportedly took place for Rs 1,000,which Ram Kumar owed to Singh. “The duo pressurised him to return the money,but he refused. They stabbed him dumped his body near the park in Sector 40,” said Malloya police post in-charge Baldev Singh.

Sector-20 financier murder: Court frames charges against five
A lower court on Saturday framed murder charges under Section 302 of the IPC against one Devinder Singh alias Whiskey and five others for killing a financier in Sector 20 last year. Businessman Harjinder Singh Dhillon was shot dead by five assailants in his office in the busy Sector-20 market on November 25,2009.

Gurudev Ram is Sector-23 RWA chief
Gurdev Ram was elected as the president of the Residents Welfare Association,Sector 23 for the term 2010-12 during the elections held today. This is Ram’s 15 th consecutive term as the president of the association. The other-office bearers include Sadhu Singh as senior vice-president,Dinesh Sharma as vice-president,A P Singh as general secretary,Kanwaljit Singh as joint secretary,K L Chhabra as organizing secretary,T C Sibal as press secretary,Sudarshan Kumar as Finance Secretary and A L Dham as auditor.

‘Methi helps control blood sugar’
Fenfuro,a diabetes management medicine containing the benefits of fenugreek (methi) can be used as a dietary supplement that helps in reduction of fasting blood sugar level. This was revealed by Dr Rakesh Jaswal,advisor Chemical Resources that produces Fenfuro during a press conference today. Dr Jaswal said he had tested the drug on some of his patients with positive results. Those taking Fenfuro along with regular diabetes medicine showed better results in controlling diabetes.

Dr P Bansal,assistant professor NIPER and in charge,Intellectual Property Right cell said that the initial clinical studies of the medicine at NIPER have proven that the product has anti-diabetic properties and is non-toxic.
