Anti-encroachment drive held in Sector 26
CHANDIGARH: An anti-encroachment drive was carried out in the Vegetable and Grain Market,Sector 26,on Saturday. The vendors were illegally occupying the roadside,pavements and area outside shops in the mandi. The encroachments had led to congestion in the area,making movement in the subzi mandi difficult. During the drive,around 400 pheriwalas,10 temporary sheds and 15 hutments were removed. Around 35 retailers selling grocery items in front of the shops in Grain Market were also removed. The drive was carried out jointly by the staff of the Market Committee,the enforcement staff of the Estate Office and Municipal Corporation along with police officials. Two bulldozers,five trucks,two tractor trolleys,around 50 labourers and over 60 police personnel were deployed for the drive,which was supervised by SDM (S) Prerna Puri Wasu.

CBI records Madhu Prakash,Aradhanas statements
Chandigarh: The special team of Central Bureau of Investigation recorded the statements of both Madhu Prakash and Aradhana in connection with the three FIRs registered against former Haryana Director General of Police S P S Rathore. The questioning was conducted at the CBI camp office in Sector 18. The process started at 11.30 am on Saturday and went on for around six hours. The process of recording of the statement of Ashu in the case has also been completed by a three-member CBI team,which reached Ashus house in Sector 12 A late on Friday night, said Anand Prakash.
IGP reviews crime situation in Mohali
MOHALI: Patiala Zonal Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paramjeet Singh Gill on Saturday reviewed the law and order situation in Mohali district. Chairing a special meeting of the district police,Gill took stock of the crime reported and solved during the last year in comparison with the crime figures of 2008. He instructed the field officers,including SHOs and police post heads,to become more responsive to the general public and give a patient hearing to all those visiting the police stations with their grievances. The IGP also stressed the need for a more effective mechanism to prevent incidents of crime. He instructed to step up efforts to solve all cases and bring to book all those involved. Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar briefed the IGP about the overall law and order situation with complete facts and figures. Patiala Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Satish Kumar Asthana was also present. Later,the IGP with DIG and SSP inspected the working at Kharar police station and CIA Staff office in Kharar.
Two convicted of robbery
CHANDIGARH: A lower court on Saturday convicted two persons for executing a robbery in 2008. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi convicted Vijay and Amar,under Section 394,397,411 and 34 of the IPC. The quantum of sentence will be announced on Monday. The case was registered on July 17,2008,when a city resident Gurnam Singh complained of being robbed of his belongings after being severely beaten up by the two accused. His purse containing Rs 200 and mobile phone were snatched. One of the accused also threatened him of dire consequences before fleeing away. The two were later arrested by the police.
Two robbers arrested
KHARAR: The Kharar City police arrested Satnam Singh alias Satta of Fatehgarh Chatauli village and Avtar Singh alias Tari of Mullanpur Sodhian village and claimed to have recovered two mobile handsets,which they had allegedly snatched from different places. City SHO Sub-Inspector Tarlochan Singh said the arrested persons were involved in snatchings and thefts in the area for the past sometime and with their arrest,the police hope to solve more cases and recover stolen goods. A case was registered.
Seminar on drug abuse held
MOHALI: On the directions of Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla to launch a campaign against drug abuse across the state,the district Health department in association with the Education department,organised a seminar at Government College in Phase VI on Saturday. Civil Surgeon Dr P K Shridhar,Government College principal Dr Nirmal Gupta,District Health Officer Dr S P Surila and Civil Hospital psychiatrist Dr Harmeet Kaur spoke on the effects of drug addiction on health and exhorted students to refrain from falling into the trap of drugs. Shridhar also expressed concern over a large number of road accidents snuffing out lives due to drunken driving. A declamation contest was also held on the theme. Gurinder Singh won the first prize while Vandana stood second and Parminder bagged the third position. Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr V K Harjayi,District Drugs Inspector Ramandeep Kaur,faculty and students of Government College were present at the seminar.
Woman commits suicide
Ambala: A newly wed woman committed suicide on Friday. Jasmo Devi,mother of the deceased Geeta Devi of Dukheri village,in her complaint to the police accused her daughters in-laws of dowry harassment. The police registered a case against her husband Vijay Kumar and other members of his family.
