Two dead in separate road accidentsAMBALA: Two persons died while another was injured in separate road accidents on Thursday. Sunil (25),a resident of Palam Vihar in Ambala Cantonment,died after he was run over by a three-wheeler. He was crossing the road after alighting from a bus. In another accident,Shashi,who was riding pillion on a scooter with her husband Harbinder,died after an unidentified vehicle hit their scooter near Jandli bridge in Ambala City. Both were rushed to the civil hospital where Shashi was declared dead on arrival while her husband was admitted with serious injuries. Nine injured in fire at factoryPARWANOO: Nine employees were injured when a massive fire broke out in a factory unit in Sector 2,Parwanoo,around 5 pm. Three of them were seriously injured and have been referred to GMCH,Sector 32,Chandigarh,while others have been admitted to ESI,Parwanoo. Three fire tenders controlled the fire in an hour but chemical fumes slowed down the rescue operation. The exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained,said Parwanoo DSP Ramesh Pathania. Kharar goes powerless for 15 hoursKHARAR: There seems to be no end in sight for the power woes of Kharar residents. Major parts of the area remained powerless for over 15 hours on Thursday. PSEB local Sub-Divisional Engineer Satwant Singh said a car rammed an electricity pole on the Mohali-Kharar stretch of National Highway-21 near Janta Nagar,damaging the overhead supply lines. Before work to repair them could begin,the ongoing four-laning project on the highway brought down more electricity poles opposite Christian High School,leading to a major power failure. Newborn boy found deadAMBALA: A newborn boy was found dead in the bushes near Government Railway Police quarters in Ambala Cantonment. The infant was wrapped in a piece of cloth and was bleeding from the mouth. The Parao police found a piece of paper tied on the hand of the baby with details of his mother and admission number of a hospital. The police have registered a case against the mother and are trying to locate her on the basis of details mentioned on the paper. 69-yr-old missing from Mohali found in AmritsarAMRITSAR: The city police on Thursday found a 69-year-old missing person,Mohali-resident Sushil Kumar Puri. He was found near the Golden Temple where he had come on October 25 without informing his family. A missing report was lodged by his family at Mohali and they apprehended that he might have gone to Amritsar for religious purpose. We received his photographs and a special team traced him, said Amritsar SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh. Youths steal friends car,arrestedPANCHKULA: Three youths were arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a car from Sector 7 on Thursday. In their mid-20s,the three are cousins and college dropouts. They hatched a plan to steal their friends car. Aditya,Gautam and Sumit coaxed their friend Karan,who is a resident of Sector 7,to hand over his Zen to them for a day. Gautam then got a duplicate key and two fake registration number plates made. Inspector Pritam Singh said the three were arrested on basis of a tip-off. The accused had planned to sell the car as Aditya had to repay a loan of Rs 20,000. While Aditya is a resident of Sector 10,Gautam and Sumit reside in Dera Bassi and Industrial Area,Phase II,Panchkula,respectively. Sumit is the son of a photojournalist. Student delegation from PU to meet Kapil SibalCHANDIGARH: A delegation of students from Panjab University will soon meet HRD Minister Kapil Sibal. Led by NSUI state president Nitin Goyal,the delegation will discuss issues like central university status for PU with the minister. There rumours that the students will meet Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi were dismissed by Goyal. There has been no communication about Rahul Gandhi meeting us, he said. French company organises camp for farmersAMBALA:With an objective to impart training and knowledge to improve crop yield and quality of produce,Carrefour,the second largest French retailer in the world,organised a farmer empowerment camp at Mithapur Krishi Vigyan Kendra,Tepla,Ambala. The camp was attended by over 150 farmers from nearby villages. In his keynote address,Carrefour India Director Yannick Dorville said that farmer camps were part of the community development programme where they aimed to accelerate growth of Indian agriculture. Director (Operations) Franck Kenner and Quality Manager Amit Sharma also spoke on the occasion.
