Kharar journalist jumps into canal,body yet to be traced
Kharar: Local journalist Ashwani Kumar Sachdeva went missing from his home here this morning. His scooter,sweater and shoes were found abandoned on the banks of Bhakra main line canal near the Mankheri village,close to Morinda,in Ropar district. Former president of Kharar Journalists Association and local chapter of Chandigarh-Punjab Union of Journalists,Sachdeva,in his late 40s,left home around 10 am and at around 10.30 am when one of his local friends called him up over his mobile phone,he (Sachdeva) reportedly told him that he was jumping into the canal near Morinda. As Sachdeva disconnected the phone and never became reachable after that,his friend contacted his family,which rushed to the spot and found his belongings.
Till the filing of this report,there was no trace of Sachdeva as the daylong efforts of the family proved futile. Though the family claimed no immediate provocation or spat that would have prompted Sachdeva to take an extreme step but they maintained that he was under depression for the past some time.
One arrested for fraud
Chandigarh: The police on Friday arrested a Kurali resident on charges of fraudulently withdrawing Rs 12,000 by stealing a cheque book of a bank employee. The police said Jagmohan,branch manager of the State Bank of Patiala,at the Punjab and Haryana High Court lodged a complaint alleging that Gurdev Singh,a resident of Kurali,had stolen the cheque book of D S Thakur,a clerk in the bank,and withdrew Rs 9,000 on November 18 and Rs 3,000 on November 19. The police has registered a case of cheating and forgery against the accused. He was today produced before a local court,which remanded him to judicial custody.
Schools,colleges,PU celebrate Gurpurab
Chandigarh: Guru Nanak Devs birthday was celebrated traditionally and with religious fervour and enthusiasm at tri-city schools,colleges and Panjab University. The days proceedings at Shishu Niketan Public School,Sector 66,Mohali,began with an interactive talk on Guru Nanak Devs life. At KV 31,there were devotional speeches and recitation of shabads. Smart Wonders School,Sector 71,Mohali celebrated Gurpurab with a special assembly,during which the teachers held students spellbound with a melodious rendition of shabad kirtan. The students also offered special prayers on the occasion. At GGDSD College,Sector 32,a path of Sukhmani Sahib was organised in the college Meditation Cell,in which the staff and students participated enthusiastically. At PU,a special lecture was delivered by Prof Jaspal Kaur Kaang,Chairperson of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies,at the Department of University School of Open Learning.
Hansraj youth fest starts today
Chandigarh: To celebrate national integration week,Hansraj Public School,Sector 6,Panchkula,will hold the All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan National Youth Festival 2010 from November 21 to 23. This is the first time the national youth festival will be held in the Panchkula region. The opening ceremony will be held at 9 am by DAV College Managing Committee Secretary Punam Suri. Arya Vidya Sabha Secretary Mohan Lal will preside over the function while DAV College Managing Committee Vice-President Justice A L Bahri will be the Guest of Honour.
Meet on emotional intelligence & health care
Chandigarh: A seminar on Emotional Intelligence Skills and Health Care Industry was organised at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH),Sector 32. The main speaker at the seminar,Ambika Patyal,highlighted how emotional intelligence (EI) skills are utilised in the healthcare profession to enhance medical practitioners output. Today,patient care includes not only quality medical care but also a care concept that encompasses respecting patients goals,preferences and choices,obliging their emotional,social and spiritual needs using the strengths of inter-disciplinary resources, Patyal noted.
Seminar on cochlear implant ends at PGI
Chandigarh: CIGICON 2010,the 8th annual conference of the Cochlear Implant Group of India,concluded on Saturday at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. During the three-day meet,discussions were held on the various recent advances in cochlear implantation. The conference was aimed at increasing awareness among the public and the medical and surgical fraternity about the diagnosis and management of deafness. National and international faculty members participated in it.
Top Canadian varsity completes 5 yrs in India
Chandigarh: University of the Fraser Valley (UFV),a top-ranked Canadian university,held a function at S D College in Sector 32,on Friday night to mark five years of its operations in India.
As part of the celebrations,scholarships worth Rs 2 lakh were awarded to meritorious students; four students of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course offered by UFV at S D College received awards for outstanding achievement in different spheres.
The award for outstanding academic achievement was won by Opinder Dhaliwal. The award for excellence in academics and sports went to Jiten Singla,and the award for continued academic excellence was won by Sonam Dutta and Amarmeet Khehra.
