A resident of Shakti Nagar,Ambala city,was robbed of her ornaments and cash by a woman and her male accomplice,who offered her a hitchhike in their car near Manav Chowk on Tuesday. The victim was waiting for a rickshaw at a secluded place in Sector 7,HUDA Colony,when the incident took place. She has lodged a complaint with the police.

Van Mahotsav celebrated
Prakriti,the environment society of Post-Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 11,Chandigarh,celebrated Van Mahotsav on Tuesday. The teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the college planted saplings. A play was also staged on the occasion. Principal Achla Dogra was the chief guest and addressed students on the issue of global warming and sustainable development.

Seats vacant at Panjab University
A few seats are lying vacant at Panjab University in the departments/courses of University Centre of Instrumentation and Microelectronics (UCIM),MSc (Instrumentation),Geography,MA (Disaster Management),Music,MA (Instrumental),Art History and Visual Arts,MA (History of Arts). Interested students may apply to the departments concerned by July 29. Admission shall be made within the already approved schedule. The last date for submission of application forms to the office of the chairman,Department of Geography,for admission to vacant seats in Master’s in Remote Sensing and GIS is August 5. The admission test will be conducted on August 9.

Mayor draws flak for taking ‘undue’ credit
Councillors of the Bharatiya Janata Party condemned Mayor for taking the credit of transfer of departments from Chandigarh Administration to Municipal Corporation on Tuesday. Councillor Rajesh Kumar Bittu,on behalf of the BJP councillors,alleged that the Mayor,while addressing a press conference,tried to take whole credit of transfer of these departments. “All councillors of the Municipal Corporation have equally contributed to this cause and deserve the credit,” he said. BJP Councillors also demanded that there should be adequate budget to run these departments.

Entrance test for MPhil (Political Science) today
The entrance test for MPhil (Political Science) will be held on July 28 at 9.30 am in the Department of Political Science,Panjab University. Candidates are advised to reach the venue at Arts Block-IV,Panjab University,Chandigarh,at 9 am.

MC approves laying of paver blocks across city
The Roads Committee of Municipal Corporation approved the laying of paver blocks worth more than Rs 1 crore in various sectors of the city on Tuesday. In a meeting held under the chairmanship of Resham Chand Jakhu and other members of the committee,16 agenda items pertaining to laying of paver blocks were approved. The members also accorded approval to lay chequered tiles in Sector 22 at a cost of Rs 1.87 lakh. Widening and carpeting at parking in the shopping centre in Sector 33 at a cost of 18.24 lakh has been approved. The committee has decided that a variety of paver blocks would be laid at shopping centre in Sector 33,greenbelt in Sector 19,near Government Model Senior Secondary Sector 18,park in Sector 22,Sectors 2,9,15,44,20,24,38,Nehru Colony in Sector 53 and Milk Colony Dhanas. It has been decided that the flooring of gymnasium at the community centre in Sector 11 would be done. Tiles would be provided along the boundary wall in Sector 23 and the Christian cemetry would be extended.

Inner Wheel Club holds plantation drive
Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Chandigarh Midtown planted saplings on the premises of a government senior secondary school on Tuesday. Former district chairperson Neeru Khattar gave the prizes to winners of poster-making and slogan competitions held in the school. The aim of the drive was to make children aware of the pitfalls of neglecting and abusing the environment.

CM approves Rs 1 crore link road project
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has approved the widening and strengthening of 7.38-km link road connecting villages with Mohali-Kharar stretch of National Highway-21 in Kharar. The road,which was in a dilapidated condition for long will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 99.1 lakh,said an official. It was recently reported that Punjab PWD Minister,Parminder Singh Dhindsa,who happened to travel through this road,got the first-hand account of its bad condition and recommended its immediate upgrade. The official disclosed that the tenders for the project would be floated shortly and the work would be completed in minimum possible time to end the public hardship.

Man crushed to death
A 45-year-old unidentified man died after he was hit by a vehicle in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The incident came to light around 1.30 pm,when a passerby noticed the victim lying unconscious at the Sector 55/56 dividing road. The police were informed and the victim was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16,where he was declared dead on arrival. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the hospital. According to the police,the deceased sustained head injuries,suggesting he was dragged to some distance by the vehicle that hit him. A case has been registered in this regard.

1 dies after consuming poison
Rinku (23),a resident of Mauli village,died after she allegedly consumed some poisonous substance on Tuesday. She was rushed to the PGI but could not be saved. Her husband Pankaj (25) is an auto-rickshaw driver. The police have informed the parents of the deceased who live in Gopalganj,Bihar. Inspector Gurmukh Singh said the matter is being investigated.
