Illegal fireworks stalls at Kurali — despite SDM raid

DESPITE THE raid by Kharar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and her team, the illegal firecracker sellers continued to flout the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders and set up stalls in different areas of Kurali, the biggest firecracker market in the region, on Wednesday.

After conducting the raid, the SDM recommended registration of nine FIRs against the cracker sellers. The raiding team also seized fireworks from the unauthorised stalls. The raid was conducted twice on Tuesday by SDM Amninder Kaur Brar and Kharar DSP Deep Kamal in different areas of Kurali town, including Singhpura road, National Highway 21 stretch leading towards Ropar and Kurali-Morinda road. Speaking to Chandigarh Newsline, SDM Brar said that during the raid, they found many unauthorised fireworks stalls. Her team seized the fireworks from many stalls and asked the local estate officer to take the confiscated fireworks to the Municipal Council’s office.

“I have recommended nine FIRs against the owners of the unauthorised fireworks stalls and asked the local SHOs to register cases. As per directions of the Deputy Commissioner, I raided twice on Wednesday and will also carry out a raid on Thursday,” she added. DSP Kamal said that after the recommendation from the civil administration, cases were registered against the owners of the unauthorised fireworks stalls.

The unauthorised fireworks sellers again put up their stalls once the raid was over. Some stall owners alleged that the officials did not take any action against the fireworks stall which was put up by the family members of Kurali Municipal Council’s president Krishna Devi.

Charanjeet Walia, a firework stall owner, said that the officials only seized some fireworks from the stall but in the evening the family members of Krishna Devi again put up the stall. The unauthorised firecrackers stalls did business till late in the evening.
