Doctors attending farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal Sunday said the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) convener was still extremely weak. Dallewal has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border on National Highway-54 for the past 41 days seeking a legal guarantee for the MSP, among other demands.

Amritpal Singh from NGO 5 Rivers Heart Association said, “On Saturday, we had suggested to him to not go to the stage as the weather was too harsh but he insisted on going and he spoke for about eight minutes… after coming back… from the stage, we had offered him water and he had vomited. The whole night, he could hardly sleep… His reflexes have slowed down.”

Doctors further said Dallewal’s blood pressure was 108/73 on Sunday, while his peripheral oxygen saturation level was 98. The respiratory rate was 18 per minute while the heart rate was 73.

Later in the evening, NGO 5 Rivers Heart Association released a bulletin stating that even if Dallewal ended his hunger strike now, his organs might not function fully. Doctors said Dallewal has been unable to stand properly for several days, making it difficult to measure his weight accurately. They noted that his muscle mass has completely depleted, and it might not recover. His glomerular filtration rate is decreasing, which is reducing his blood purification capacity.

US-based cardiologist Dr Swaimaan Singh, who is the founder of 5 Rivers Heart Association, said, “Dallewalji is not taking any drip. But our doctors are taking care of him around the clock. Government doctors are allowed to come once a day but only under our team’s supervision.”

A team of government doctors and officials visited Khanauri to enquire about the health of Dallewal on Sunday evening. The next date of hearing on his health in the Supreme Court is on January 6 (Monday).

Dr Swaimaan Singh also appealed to farmer unions to unite for a common cause. Notably, unity talks are going on between Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and SKM but SKM (NP) is not participating in these talks.

The team includes Dr Nanak Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala; and Narinder Bhargav, retired IPS officer, among others.
