The imposition of House Tax and the contentious issue of bringing villages under the ambit of property tax are expected to rock the General House meeting of the Municipal Corporation, scheduled for June 28.
The House Tax proposal recently received approval from the UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil but has divided the House. Rejected several times before in the MC House,it was approved in February this year amidst much opposition and ruckus. The proposal was then sent to the UT Administration for approval. A few days back,Patil gave his consent to the proposal of levying of House Tax at Rs 1 per sq yard per annum.
This is being opposed by the BJP-SAD councillors who had condemned the move during a party meeting. The councillors will now express their opposition in the MC House as well.
The other prominent issue relates to the MCs House Tax Assessment sub-committee recently giving its assent for the inclusion of five villages that were transferred to the civic body under the ambit of property tax. This too has been criticised by the councillors.
This year, most of the meetings of the House have resulted in ruckus. No discussion has been held on the agenda items. These are passed amidst much din in the House. At times, even policy decisions are approved without looking at the pros and cons. Some of these had to be re-examined later.
