Hotel Mehfil collapses in Chandigarh’s Sector 17, no injuries reported
According to sources, the building had recently developed cracks following which the Chandigarh administration evacuated it.

A hotel located close to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Chandigarh’s Sector 17, which was declared unsafe and evacuated a few days ago, collapsed early on Monday. No casualty or injury has been reported in the incident.
According to sources, three pillars of Hotel Mehfil – which had been closed for some years – developed cracks a week ago following some renovation work. The Chandigarh administration then evacuated the building. As a precautionary measure, police had even closed the route in front of the hotel.
Sanjeev Rana, who has a studio near the building, said that “when cracks developed a week ago, even adjacent buildings had shaken.”
Speaking to The Indian Express, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Yadav said they had received information about the building some days ago. “Some renovation work was going on and the building’s pillars looked damaged. We had cordoned off the area. This morning it collapsed. We will look into the matter,” he added.

“Separately, the estate office has issued a notice to the owner as the revised building plan was not approved and the renovation was being done without nod,” the DC said.
Erected in the 1960s, the hotel initially belonged to former Union minister Harmohan Dhawan who sold it around two decades later.
Last month, a multi-storeyed building collapsed at Sohana in Mohali, killing two people.
