Tension prevailed in the residential area of Sector 34-C after a man, reportedly in an inebriated state, fired four gunshots around 9.30 pm on Thursday. The accused Harnek Singh,a lecturer in Amritsar, was taken to a Sector-16 hospital for medical examination.
Harnek, however, claimed that when he took his dog out for a walk near his Sector-34 residence, four youths almost overran his pet under their rashly driven vehicle. An altercation ensued, following which Harnek went inside his house, took out his revolver and began firing indiscriminately.
The youths fled the scene even as police arrived on the spot. Eyewitnesses said Harnek Singh created a ruckus and shouted at Station House officer (SHO)Uday Pal when he was asked to accompany the police party to the Sector-16 hospital.
The police have taken the weapon and are ascertaining if Harnek possesses a licence for the same.
