The Himachal Pradesh Police are on high alert after two Congress MLAs and a few senior bureaucrats received anonymous threat calls warning to assassinate Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Independence Day.
The two Congress MLAs who received the calls are Bhuvneshwar Gaur (Manali) and Rakesh Kalia (Gagret).
Sources said unknown persons threatened the MLAs against Sukhu’s scheduled programme to hoist the national flag in Dehra to mark Independence Day. The state police have registered two separate FIRs and have started an investigation.
MLA Bhuvneshwar Gaur told The Indian Express, “I received the call from an unknown number yesterday (Tuesday). The caller claimed that he was speaking on behalf of the Sikhs for Justice. The caller claimed that they will harm CM sahib and Himachal Pradesh will be a part of Khalistan.”
Gaur added, “I tried to tell him ‘What nonsense are you speaking?’ and partially recorded the call. I believe the suspect became suspicious that his call was being recorded and he disconnected. I lodged an FIR at the Patlikuhal police station in Manali.”
Meanwhile, Kalia was not available for comments.
Dehra, where Sukhu is scheduled to hoist the national flag, falls in district Kangra. Superintendent of Police, Kangra, Shalini Agnihotri, said, “There are strong security arrangements in view of Independence Day.”
