Himachal Confidential

Dutiful public servant
A Deputy Commissioner known more for his skill to appease political masters, recently became a quite an embarrassment for his seniors. He seemed to have faulted in handling a land transfer case of an industrialist, naturally earning the ire of the government. When advised to rectify the mistake, and quickly clear the file, the IAS officer could not really restrain himself to be a dutiful “public” servant. The next day,he personally carried the file to the concerned senior secretary.

Ironically, the gentleman did not realize that his over enthusiasm caused a huge dent to the dignity he holds. Now,the issue has become a hot topic in the corridors of the Secretariat ahead of the transfer season.

A snub well deserved!
A pension adalat, recently held in Shimla, proved to be a big relief to hundreds for ex-servicemen who till now ran from pillar to post to get their dues. Frustrations and anger among the retired soldiers were palpable as emotions ran high.

As one of the defence officers at the adalat chose to address the retired jawans in fluent English and delivered a long speech, which a majority of pension seekers could not understand,an ex-serviceman got up and interrupted the officer. “Sahibji, hamari bhasha mein baat karo. Na to aap ki bhasha humay samj aa rahi, aur na aap ko hamari,” he said.

Dinner diplomacy
Union Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh’s political agenda for Himachal is not a secret anymore. His heart still beats for Shimla and Raja sahib wants to return as Chief Minister after the next elections. Among the few signs of his renewed interest in Himachal is his last week’s dinner meeting with top bureaucrats and other IAS officers in Delhi on Central deputations.

No favours
Recently,a private hydro power company known for welding enough influence in the state’s political circles, offered a top job to a senior serving bureaucrat. The bureaucrat did not budge as he knew the company has more interest in getting its crucial file cleared that he had rejected in the larger public interest and also to deny due favour to the company.
