Real Life Real People isn’t a very large or famous NGO but we do as much as we can and we do it to the best of our ability,” says M A Hussain, founder of the Real Life Real People Foundation. Created eight years ago, this Akurdi-based NGO has been helping those in need, irrespective of age, gender or the nature of their problem. Its services to society were recognised in 2010 when it gained government authorisation.

The founder, being of humble origins himself, can relate to the people he reaches out to. “I had a ball point pen stall. I would visit small schools and hospitals to market these pens. That’s when I came face-to-face with the problems that people were facing,” he says. He used to travel to the remotest areas, villages, and talukas. The moment his business saw success,he decided to give back to society.

The foundation has had a good run so far yet there are a few hiccups along the way. “The fact is that there are a lot of NGOs in the market. They are well-known and have strong associations and people backing them. People don’t trust organisations that are not famous. They don’t want to donate,” shares Hussain. Even after being authorised by the government, there is not much change in this situation as the organisation still can’t afford publicity.

The NGO has three major programmes. The first is offering free meals to the underprivileged. Last year, they were able to feed more than 5000 people and they aim to better that number this year. They feed the poor every day at the Yashawantrao Chavan Muncipal Corporation Hospital and Hussain personally checks the wards of the hospital at night to make sure no patient sleeps hungry. The second project is a children’s education programme, wherein children who are orphaned or who come from impoverished backgrounds are adopted and their academic expenses are taken care of. Lastly, the NGO has a surgical or medical programme; wherein the medical expenses for those who cannot afford treatment are taken care of.

A volunteer of the NGO,Harsha Shaha, says,“I found out about Real Life Real People through Hussain when he had put up a stall at the flea market at Ishanya Mall. His aim was to educate people about the cause. It is difficult yet satisfying work and at the end of the day,I feel good to be a part of it.”
