HC criticises Punjab DGP for no action against convicted cops

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed its displeasure over the “callous attitude” of Punjab Police in not keeping a check on the convicted officers in service.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed its displeasure over the “callous attitude” of Punjab Police in not keeping a check on the convicted officers in service. Terming the attitude of the director general of police (DGP) as “lacklustre”,Justice Hemant Gupta pulled up the top cop for not taking action against convicted police officers.

The judge remarked that “lacklustre attitude of DGP Punjab in not taking action against convicted cops cannot be appreciated”.

The observation was made on Monday during the resumed hearing of a contempt petition filed by Advocate H C Arora, seeking action against Punjab Chief Secretary S C Agrawal for his failure to monitor the action taken by departmental authorities against employees on their conviction in various cases.

Referring to the latest affidavit submitted by Agrawal in this case,Justice Gupta observed that apart from five employees in the local government department,as many as 74 police officers, including four DSPs,were still in service despite having been convicted for various criminal offences.
